The Vampire Diaries April 19 recap: Heart of Darkness

Image

April 19 – Several characters from the past made return appearances, a new allegiance was forged and Damon made some serious progress in his bid to win over Elena’s heart in the latest episode of TVD, “Heart of Darkness.” The Salvatores and Elena decide they need to get to Jeremy in Denver before Klaus now that Klaus has discovered his whereabouts. Stefan suggests that Elena and Damon will hit the road alone while he stays home to watch over Alaric and wait until his evil alter ego reemerges with the secret to the location of the dagger that can kill Klaus. Stefan thinks Elena needs some time alone to assess her feelings for his brother. Bad idea! When Damon and Elena find a studly Jeremy at a batting range, they explain to him that they need to trace the lineage of each Original vampire since killing an Original will destroy all the vamps he or she sired. Getting in touch with Rose, through Jeremy’s gift, is their next step. Naturally, danger follows Jeremy wherever he goes and a friend he’s expecting turns out to be Kol, who’s thirsting for a rematch with Damon. Damon manages to outmaneuver Kol and the three hide out at a local motel. Jeremy manages to conjure the spirit of Rose in her cute little shag haircut and she reveals that her sire was not Klaus but a woman named Mary Foster, whom Damon refers to as “Crazy Mary.” She also clues Jeremy in on the developing bond between his sister and Damon. Elena is touched to learn how Damon compelled the dying Rose to imagine herself spending a final day in the sun as a human rather than feel the pain of her impending death. Elena realizes that, although well hidden, Damon still has his humanity. This is very bad for Stefan, folks. We all know there’s nothing sexier than finding the soft side of a bad boy vampire. That night, a vigilant Damon watches over Elena, shirtless of course as his chiseled body shines in the moonlight. Damon is uncomfortable when Elena brings up his good deed for Rose, but reaches out to her, sensing that it’s brought them closer. Although torn, Elena can no longer fight her attraction to Damon and the two melt into a steamy embrace as they devour each other in passionate kisses! This ain’t no chaste “Twilight” scene, folks. Team Delena cheers. Team Stelena hisses. Our collective screams are interrupted by Jeremy, of course, with the news that Mary Foster is living in Kansas. When the trio arrive at her home, they discover it’s more like she’s dead in Kansas, staked by Kol, who beats Damon up but inexplicably doesn’t kill him. Afterward, Damon senses Elena pull away from his caress and discovers that she expects him to do something to ruin their new bond. Realizing their trip was a test of her feelings, Damon’s disappointed, hurt and tells her he won’t make it easy for her to choose Stefan over him. The choice between the Salvatores is one she will need to make on her own. As the trio head back home, Damon and Elena stew in uncomfortable silence while Jeremy gets another visit from Rose, who explains to him that Damon deserves his chance to win Elena because he challenges her in ways Stefan does not. Back in Mystic Falls, Caroline and Rebekah clash over competing ’70s and ’30s themes for the upcoming decades dance (another excuse to put the cast in cute costumes I’m sure) and Matt sides with Becky.  What the Beckster doesn’t realize is that Matt and Caroline set up the argument to distract her while Caroline sets out to meet a returning Tyler.  When Matt drops Becky off at her home, she discovers her mom Esther there. Mother and daughter have a tense confrontation that ends with Esther collapsing. Klaus arrives and Becky tells him their mother is dead. Is she really? Tyler, randy as ever, has a vigorous naked reunion with his voluptuous vamp but is disturbed to learn that his life is on the line if his sire Klaus is offed. He’s even more upset to discover that Klaus is putting the moves on his gal and Caroline may not be totally immune to his attentions.  Alaric goads Stefan into beating the crap out of him to set loose his dark side and indeed, Bad Ric emerges and tells him that the stake with Klaus’ name on it is in the cave where vamps can’t enter. Trouble is that Klaus and Rebekah are in the living room and know it, too! Rebekah takes Bad Ric down to the cave to retrieve the dagger while Klaus and Stefan have a little chat. Klaus plays it all big and evil, trotting out the usual threats against Stefan and all those he holds dear, but Stefan sees right through his theatrics. He knows Klaus doesn’t really want to kill him and Klaus counters that it’s only a matter of time before The Ripper returns to his side. In the cave, Bad Ric decides he doesn’t want to return the dagger to his captors, but Becky does him one better by stepping into the cave! She’s actually Esther inhabiting Rebekah’s body and she wants to team up with Bad Ric to get rid of the Originals once and for all!

The Vampire Diaries April 19 Episode Sneak Peek Video: Elena & Alaric chat.

Howdy. It’s been ages since I’ve posted and, well, it’s been ages since we’ve had a fresh episode of TVD to get excited about. I practically forgot where we left off. Just kidding. The focus lately has been on poor Alaric’s split personality and this preview scene from The CW shows Elena having a heart-to-heart with Ric about her impending road trip to Denver with Damon to get Jeremy before Klaus can get to him. It seems Stefan suggested the trip as a way for Elena to work through her feelings for Damon. Hmm, now let me see. Elena alone on the road with red-hot Damon Salvatore’s smokin’ bod, irresistible smirk and sexy eyebrows on a long trip across the country? How might they pass the time? Bad idea, Stefan! Don’t miss the first of the final four episodes of the season tomorrow night!

The Vampire Diaries March 22 Episode Recap: Damon finds wood from the Original Tree!

Will Sage's betrayal of Damon cost her the love of her undead life?

March 22 – Damon plays cat and mouse with Sage and Rebekah in a kinky triangle that leads to a series of doublecrosses. Alaric, meanwhile, wrestles with his major Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde complex, putting his loved ones in great peril. Meredith submits Ric to an MRI to determine if there’s a physical cause of his murderous episodes and during the procedure his dark side proves a tricky one as it takes over discreetly, waiting just below the surface to pounce on his next victim. While Ric’s normal half is seemingly in control, he asks Elena to find his wedding band to use as a device for Bonnie’s enchantment to control his murderous alter ego.  Bonnie is having trouble supporting Abby as she transitions into being a vampire, even with Caroline’s help. Abby can no longer feel the bond witches have with nature and walks around like a husk of her former self. When Caroline brings Jamie around to see her, Abby’s vampire urge kicks in while they embrace and she bites him! Abby explains to Bonnie that the many deaths and resuscitations Alaric has endured have chipped away at this psyche, allowing the same psychotic rage that doomed Elena’s ancestor Samantha Gilbert in 1912 take hold of him. Although she’s proven helpful to her daughter, Abby is disgusted by her new undead life and leaves town despite Caroline’s pleas to stay for Bonnie’s sake. Alaric gives Elena all his personal financial information in case the latest efforts to save him from his killer personality end in tragedy. Elena is alarmed to remember that Ric gave one of his protection rings to Jeremy. Is her baby brother at risk of developing a killer personality to match his killer good looks? Stefan, still awkward around Elena after she saw him feed uncontrollably on an innocent girl, helps her piece together the mystery of her ancestor’s fate. Turns out Samantha killed herself in the loony bin and victims of the curse of the protection ring don’t necessarily stop having deadly blackouts because they took it off. Cue Alaric’s latest shift to the dark side, folks.

It turns out that Dr. Fell is a good gal after all. Or is she?

As Meredith fixes some coffee, Ric confronts her about being a Mystic Falls council member, the organization whose founding families he has targeted in his killing spree for failing to protect the town’s citizens from vampires! Meredith successfully evades Alaric’s lunges and locks herself in the bathroom, but notices a gash he inflicted on her just before she got away. When Elena drops by, Ric attacks her as well but is overpowered by Stefan, who controls his bloodlust and saves Meredith from bleeding to death. When he comes to, Damon tells him they’re going to send him to detox from his experience under the treatment of an enchanted remedy Bonnie prepared to keep his alter ego in check. Time will tell if her spell proves strong enough. Damon has been keeping busy with a new project: tracking down the remaining wood from the ancient oak tree that was the source of power to kill the Original vampires. He suspects that Rebekah is hot on the wood’s trail and raises an eyebrow when he spots the bloodthristy blonde bombshell at a ceremony commemorating the restoration of historic Wickery Bridge. Does every spot in Mystic Falls have historical significance? Damon spots a contemporary Sage snooping about, too. After the two she-vamps have a bitchy confrontation, Damon learns that Sage is in town to track down her beloved maker, Finn. She convinces Damon to work his charms on Becky and exploit her feminine weakness to learn her secrets. This leads to a booze-fueled encounter in which Damon and Becky hit the sheets again. While Rebekah snoozes in the afterglow, Sage plays mindreader and discovers her plans to find the wood from the Original tree and dispose of it before the good guys can use it to kill Klaus and his siblings. Sage shares this information with Damon — naked in the shower, of course — but sneaks out on him with Rebekah, determined to prevent him from using the wood to end her precious Finn. Sage knows that the Originals are bound by their mother’s witchcraft and cannot let Damon act against any of them. Damon is peeved to find Rebekah enjoying a bonfire from the wood in Wickery Bridge. He can’t hurt Sage for her betrayal — she’s much older than him — but promises to start with Finn when he finds a way to destroy the Originals once and for all! As the residents of Mystic Falls close out another fun-filled day, Elena calls Jeremy to check up on him. He’s still cute as can be whether or not he’s a raging psycho hunk. Bonnie finds it in her heart to forgive Elena and a smirking Damon shows Stefan a sign he salvaged from Wickery Bridge with just enough wood to create a set of deadly stakes meant for each of the Original siblings. Time to throw down, folks!

The Vampire Diaries January 5 recap: Jeremy leaves Mystic Falls (and Damon kisses Elena again)!

Damon is tired of feeling guilty for "wanting what he wants."

January 5 – Jeremy goes through some major changes and Elena makes “A New Deal” with Klaus to protect someone she loves as The Vampire Diaries returns from its holiday break with a twisty, action-packed episode. The Mystic Falls gang is feeling antsy waiting around for Klaus to retaliate in response to Stefan’s theft of the coffins containing the remaining members of his slumbering family. Bonnie is haunted by a spooky premonition of finding the coffins while Elena has an unsettling encounter with a handsome stranger who turns out to be one of Klaus’s hybrid henchman stalking her as she jogs. Damon gets tipsy drinking alone at The Grill while he and Alaric try to figure out what Stefan and Klaus are up to. Meanwhile, everyone is concerned about Jeremy’s behavior in the wake of his breakup with Bonnie. Elena’s baby brother has taken to cheating on this schoolwork, got fired from his job at The Grill and, most alarmingly, is suddenly buddy-buddy with Tyler. When the trio springs an intervention on Jeremy it backfires and he invites Tyler into the Gilbert-Saltzman home. Now a dangerous hybrid under the influence of Klaus has complete access to their home, Elena worries. Although Tyler assures the gang he’s not a threat to them, Klaus activates a deadly plan B from afar when his ploy to win Damon’s cooperation in getting the coffins back from Stefan fails. To wear down Damon and Elena’s resistance, Klaus compels Jeremy to stand in front of an oncoming SUV driven by his henchman but Ric pushes Jeremy out of the way and is “killed” temporarily while Elena tends to her confused brother. Jeremy is fed up with the daily threats to his life and confronts Tyler about weaning him off vervane to make him vulnerable to Klaus’s influence. Tyler, in turn, is miffed at Klaus’s willingness to sacrifice Jeremy to achieve his goals. Bonnie discovers that Stefan is hiding the Originals’ coffins in the abandoned house haunted by the grouchy witches from the past and clues Elena in. When Elena asks Stefan for his help to protect Jeremy, she’s disgusted by his refusal and slaps him! Damon endures the agonizing sunlight unleashed by the witches to keep him out of the house and drags Stefan outside where he beats his younger brother into admitting he spared Klaus to save Damon’s life. The Salvatores agree to cooperate to work against Klaus while keeping Elena out of the line of fire. Elena, however, has other ideas. She reveals to Klaus Rebekah’s daggered body in exchange for his pledge to not hurt Jeremy. He promises to keep Rebekah from hurting her but Elena warns him that he will need protection from Rebekah as well since she now knows that he killed their mother back in the good old days. Klaus somberly decides to keep his unpredictable sister daggered, which leaves the door open for the eventual arrival of Klaus’s two other brothers Finn and Kol, played by Casper Zafer and Nathaniel Buzolic, respectively.

Have we seen the last of Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen)?

When Ric comes back to life his protection ring fails to cure him of his internal injuries from the car accident and Elena calls an ambulance. The paramedics, however, turn out to be under the control of Klaus’s henchman, who demands to be let inside in order to save Ric. Just as it looks hopeless, Jeremy shoots him with a crossbow and decapitates him in front of his horrified sister. At the hospital, Ric’s regenerative power catches the attention of a sexy doctor played by Paul Wesley’s wife Torrey DeVitto, who’s rockin’ a serious Angelina Jolie vibe. Will the hot doc help Ric with his damaged power or will she complicate matters? Stay tuned! After cleaning the latest blood stains off her porch, Elena decides to take drastic action to keep Jeremy out of harm’s way. Damon compels Jeremy to leave Mystic Falls indefinitely as a tearful Elena looks on. Feeling guilty when a grateful Elena cozies up to him, Damon admits that Stefan didn’t really betray them when he saved Klaus then he indulges himself by giving her a red-hot kiss that’s worth feeling guilty over. The kiss leaves Elena breathless and Stefan one step closer to losing his gal. Watch out Team Stelena!

The Vampire Diaries October 27 Episode Recap: Are Bonnie and Jeremy over?

Have lingering feelings for Anna cost Jeremy his relationship with Bonnie?

October 27 – Just in time for Halloween, “Ghost World” is a rather “spirited” edition of The Vampire Diaries as deceased loved ones haunt the Mystic Falls gang after Bonnie breaches the doorway between the living and the dead. Damon regains consciousness to find himself chained to a chair and tortured by the ghost of Mason Lockwood in the exact fashion that he killed Mason last season. Although Mason enjoys sticking it to Damon – literally – he’s popped up for a more noble reason. He wants to protect his nephew Tyler from a life of servitude under Klaus and knows of an old Lockwood family legend – that family history has a million of ’em – regarding a weapon that can be used to kill an Original Vampire. Mason toys with Damon, leading him to the cellar on the Lockwood family grounds and letting him get impaled by a booby trap set up to protect the secret weapon. While Mason pulls Damon’s strings, the other residents of Mystic Falls receive ghostly visits that stir up old emotions. Anna is acting like she and Jeremy can make a go of it as a couple even though she’s, well, dead. What’s worse is that Jeremy admits to Elena that he still loves Anna. Elena’s not pleased by this turn of events, but she enlists his help in conjuring the presence of Stefan’s bestie Lexi in hopes of pulling him out of the darkness of his Ripper persona. Lexi’s in rare form, overpowering Stefan and strapping him to a chair in the Salvatore dungeon — everyone in town seems to have one of these — while she tortures him to make him feel again and reclaim his humanity. While Jeremy is off kissing Anna, Bonnie’s magic brings forth the spirit of her witch grandmother – played by Jasmine Guy of the ‘80s sitcom It’s a Different World— who demands she correct the imbalance she caused in the natural order of things by resurrecting Jeremy.  The Original Witch’s talisman must be destroyed! But where the hell is that damned thing? At the Founder’s Day celebration, a band of vengeful vampire ghosts settle some old scores with the descendants of the Mystic Falls founding families – targeting Tyler’s mom Carol among them – but Caroline leaps to the rescue.

Mason paid Damon back from beyond the grave.

Jeremy discovers that Anna, who doesn’t want to be sent back to her lonely place on the other side, has the necklace. Luckily, Elena manages to guilt her into giving it up.  Jeremy returns it to an angry Bonnie, who tosses it in a fireplace, sending all the spirits back to Ghost World. Grandma Jasmine is proud of the Bonster. Lexi runs out of time in her intervention with Stefan but urges Elena not to lose hope. Anna is reunited with her mother as a reward for returning the talisman. Mason fades away just as he discovers the key to finding the weapon to use against Klaus. Damon, who can’t enter the space in the cave without being invited, summons Alaric. Ric is amazed to find a wall covered with ancient hieroglyphics that tell the story of the Original Vampires – Klaus’ Viking family. This is the point where we learn more about what led to Klaus being such a crummy dude. That’s great and all, but I still want to know what happened to Katherine when Michael bit her! Any ideas?

The Vampire Diaries October 13 Episode Recap: Klaus turns Tyler into a hybrid!

Klaus discovers that Elena is more valuable to him alive.

October 13 – A new twist emerges in the hybrid curse mythology, Klaus the hunter becomes the hunted, and Matt spends a lot of time dripping wet –not that it’s a bad thing– on a slam-bam episode of The Vampire Diaries called “The Reckoning.”  On the eve of Senior Prank Night, Matt is working up a sweat at the Mystic Falls High gym and is surprised by Caroline, Tyler, Elena and Bonnie, who are setting up some mischievous surprises to celebrate their senior year. The pranking turns to panic, however, when Klaus leads an assault on the school after learning that Elena’s still alive. Rebecca shows that she’s cut from the same nasty cloth as her brother by stabbing Stefan in a jealous fit over Elena and capturing Caroline and Tyler after interrupting their heated makeout session. As the lone werewolf present, Tyler is chosen as Klaus’s newest candidate for hybrid conversion while Bonnie is challenged to fix the glitch in Klaus’s process in time to save Tyler’s life. Tick tock! The clock is ticking for Elena, too, when Klaus regains control over a rebellious Stefan and forces him to slay two of the episode’s disposable extras while Elena watches in horror. Matt and Bonnie race to find a way to save Tyler. Sensing that the ghost of Vicki has been trying to contact him, Matt decides to pull a Jeremy by drowning himself in the school pool to be revived by Bonnie with the power to contact the dead. Bonnie dives in like a champ and rescues him without using witchcraft. I just love that gal! She kicks ass. A soaked Matt may have done a stupid thing but his ploy worked. Vicki shows up and tells him about Elena’s role in the failure of the hybrid ceremony. Vicki looks beautiful and happy to see her brother again, but is there something sinister lurking behind her toothy smile as Anna had suggested to Jeremy?

Tyler is half werewolf and half vampire now, so he's twice as hot!

In another pulse-pounding scenario, Klaus compels Stefan to drain Elena when the gym clock counts down to zero. In a heartbreaking scene for members of Team Stefan, Elena pleads with him to fight his bloodlust to no avail. Elena later comes to in the hospital hooked up to an IV harvesting her blood.  Acting on a hunch, Klaus stops Stefan from killing her and feeds a vial of her blood to Tyler, who successfully converts into a were-vampire. The process gives Tyler a buoyant sense of power. Klaus deduced that the Original Witch lied about the doppelganger needing to be killed for the hybrid curse to be broken so that Klaus would never to be able to create a race of hybrids and would spend eternity alone. Rebecca teases Klaus about his fear of ending up alone. Maybe he should try being a nicer guy? I’m just sayin’! Just as it looks like things are looking up for Klaus, Damon returns from a road trip with Katherine with news that the mysterious dude who trailed Klaus in Chicago, Michael, is back on the prowl. Klaus hightails it out of Mystic Falls but leaves Stefan behind to watch over Elena – or more specifically, her valuable hybrid-makin’ blood. Katherine borrowed Jeremy, stuffing him in the trunk of the car she and Damon were driving, to tap into his ability to speak with Anna, whose mom knew the secret of the mysterious Michael. Inexplicably, Michael is a vampire who is also a vamp hunter and is jonesing to kill Klaus (then again, who isn’t?).  Damon rescues Elena from the hospital and eases her pain over Stefan’s betrayal, vowing to never leave her alone. Swoon! Meanwhile, Kat and Jeremy find Michael’s tomb and wake him. Will Michael the vampire hunter be a danger to our favorite sexy vampires?

The Vampire Diaries September 22 Episode Recap: Caroline is held hostage by her own father!

Ray and his pack mates were doomed to fail the hybrid transformation process because Elena is still alive.

September 22 – A full moon is set to descend on Mystic Falls and you know what that means. Things are gonna get mighty hairy for our Vampire Diaries favorites. After a bitter Damon gives up on Stefan for killing Andie, Elena turns to Alaric for help in going after Stefan. She gets a lead fromTyleron locations inTennesseewhere werewolves would find sanctuary then heads off to the Smokey Mountains with Ric. Preparing for their dangerous mission, Ric gives Elena some wolf’s bane and she hands him her protection ring. What Elena doesn’t know is that Alaric had clued Damon in on their plans and he shows up to keep her out of trouble. Seemingly annoyed by his interference, Elena is begrudgingly comforted by his presence. But is a forest teeming with bloodthirsty werewolves the best place for Damon to be?  Klaus and Stefan discover the camp site of Ray’s pack and commence the process of transforming them into hybrids, using the human boyfriend of one of the she-wolves as a blood bank for the famished were-vamps when they come to. Unfortunately, the process doesn’t work out as planned and a convulsing Ray, bleeding out of his eyes, goes rabid, biting Stefan as he escapes. Klaus tells Stefan he won’t save him with his hybrid blood until he brings Ray back. Damon, Elena and Ric encounter Ray first, however, and subdue him. After tying him up in chains they attempt to interrogate him but he begins to transform into a wolf before the full moon even appears! A feral Ray later gets into a scrap with Damon, and Stefan arrives in the nick of time to save his brother by ripping Ray’s heart out. Stefan asks Damon to return Elena to safety. Elena, meanwhile, convinces Alaric that they should be there for each other now that they’ve both lost so much. Alaric agrees to move back in, and he wisely decides to keep the protection ring. Stefan returns to the camp site to find Klaus surrounded by dead hybrids. They had all gone rabid or bled out and Klaus can’t understand how the transformations failed after he had completed every step of breaking the curse that prevented hybrids from walking the Earth.  A look of realization flashes across Klaus’s face. Has he figured out that Elena – the doppelganger who needed to die to break the curse – isn’t six feet under? Stefan distracts him, for now, anyway, by convincing him to heal his werewolf bite. Stefan is, after all, his only companion left, Klaus says morbidly. Back in Mystic Falls, Tyler and Jeremy are in for some shocking discoveries. Waking up to find Caroline gone after their steamy night together,Tyler has some awful-tasting coffee while chatting with his mom about his tryst with Caroline. When Tyler leaves, Mrs. Lockwood summons a man named Bill (played by Jack Coleman of “Heroes” fame) to take care of her vampire problem. Tyler tastes some vervane at The Grill and Matt clues him in about the substance’s use for outing vampires. Tyler realizes his mom was testing him and confronts her. She admits she knows that Caroline is a vamp and forbids him to see her because she’s a monster. Tyler decides to show his prejudiced mother that the Lockwoods have a “monster” of their own in the family and chains himself up while she watches his werewolf transformation from the safety of a locked cell. In the morning, an enlightened Mrs. Lockwood promises to make things right with Caroline but finds that “Bill” isn’t keen on releasing Caroline just because she had a change of heart. When Caroline comes to, she’s shocked to learn that her jailer is her own father. Awkward! Jeremy convinces Matt to help him bridge the gateway between the living and the dead by gathering some of Vicky’s possessions to tap into her vibe. Although hesitant at first, Matt agrees to help and Jeremy gets another visit from his (first) dead girlfriend, whom I must say is looking gorgeous. Death certainly becomes her. Vicky’s ghost tells Jeremy that she is able to return from the dead, then abruptly disappears. Appearing in her place is Anna (dead girlfriend #2), who warns Jeremy not to trust Vicky. The plot thickens! When Damon, Elena and Alaric return home, Damon forces Elena to admit she bid a hasty retreat from the woods in Tennessee out of fear for the werewolf threat to Damon’s life. Taking Elena’s face in his hands, Damon vows to make her remember her feelings for him after they succeed in rescuing Stefan. Looks like Miss Elena has a choice to make in the near future.  Do you think Damon is making progress in his quest to win her over?
