TVD’s Fierce Females: Caroline is the Wonder Woman of The Vampire Diaries

It's easy to understand why Matt and Tyler love Caroline so much.

It’s December 31 and I’m getting ready for tonight’s New Year’s celebration. Before I ring in 2012 I am continuing my tribute posts to the ladies of The Vampire Diaries by giving a huge shout out to Candice Accola as vamp-in-training Caroline Forbes. While the Salvatore brothers swapped personalities and revealed some new sides of themselves to TVD fans this season, it’s Caroline who gets my vote for the Mystic Falls resident who has changed the most over the years. The decision to turn Caroline, the stereotypical vapid cheerleading-captain-slash-homecoming-queen, into a feral vampire was a shocker. We all thought she might go the route of Vicki and be another of Damon’s short-term victims (although technically it was Katherine who completed Caroline’s transformation). Then the TVD writers pulled a switcheroo, to our huge benefit, and gave Candice the juicy opportunity to take us on her journey from confused baby vamp holding on to her dumb-blonde traits to confident, caring vampire coming to terms with who she is and using her new strengths — both physical and emotional — to protect the people she loves. I loved the scene in the Ghost World episode where she took on the ghosts terrorizing the crowd at the Founder’s Day festival. She jumped right in and started tossing those guys around like Wonder Woman.  Candice also shines in scenes where she confronts her parents with the reality of who she is and how becoming a vampire has helped her grow up. Her love scenes with the muscular Michael Trevino as Tyler crackle with a sensuality perhaps more suited to cable shows, but they reveal the many layers of this talented young actress.. quite literally! Let’s not forget what a great singer she is, too. Who can forget her serenading Matt with a killer rendition of The Bangle’s “Eternal Flame?” I suggest the TVD writers give Caroline a job as a singer at The Grill so we can hear Candice sing more often. I’m sure Matt wouldn’t mind.

The Vampire Diaries September 29 Episode Recap: Katherine Returns!

Stefan was devilishly handsome - and just plain demonic - back in the Roaring Twenties.

September 29 – In an episode full of glamorous flashbacks, The Vampire Diaries explored dysfunctional family dynamics as Caroline literally got some tough love from her father and we met Klaus’s twisted sister Rebecca. In the wake of his failed attempt to create a community of hybrids inTennessee, Klaus takes Stefan to their old haunts from the Roaring Twenties – Chicago – to get answers about why the curse wasn’t broken from a powerful witch named Gloria. Little does Stefan know that he’s going to find out a lot more about his past – and his relationship with Klaus – then he bargained for. Chicago was the site of some seriously bad vampire action for Stefan during his Ripper days. He was a dapper demon who enjoyed making his victims suffer and memorialized his victims by keeping a list of their names in a wine closet he kept in his apartment. Worse still, he and Klaus were friends back then! Also delving into Stefan’s colorful past are Damon and Elena, who are tipped off about Stefan’s location by Katherine. Klaus’s witch friend tells him she needs to speak with his sister Rebecca in order to make contact with the Original witch who could reveal why the hybrid transformations aren’t working. Are you still with me? This hybrid curse mythology is getting more and more convoluted. The problem is that Rebecca is dead. Klaus, who went by the name Nick in the Twenties, staked her after she had fallen for Stefan and chose him over remaining with her brother. Klaus finds Rebecca’s coffin and removes the stake, leaving a compelled guard to serve as her first meal upon her resurrection. Arriving in The Windy City, Damon and Elena check out Stefan’s old pad and Elena is spooked by the alarmingly long list of Stefan’s victims. Like Damon said, Stefan’s not in town to visit Oprah! While Damon drops in on Gloria at her bar, Klaus takes Stefan on a trip down memory lane by stopping by his apartment and nearly catches Elena hiding in the wine closet. Luckily, Stefan is the one to peek in and covers up for her. The Stefan she knows and loves is still there… for now, anyway. Outside Gloria’s bar, Stefan reads Damon the riot act about bringing Elena to Chicago and demands he get her out of town. Elena, however, tries to convince him to return to Mystic Falls with her. Not only does Stefan refuse, but he catches her trying to drug him with a tranquilizer. He’s over her, he lies. Elena is finally starting to believe him.

Will Gloria uncover the fact that Elena is still alive?

Inside, Damon distracts Klaus to give Elena time to rescue Stefan, but the ornery hybrid tires of their witty banter and tries to stake him but Gloria intervenes. She won’t have blood spilled in her establishment, she commands. I like that gal! Back in Mystic Falls, Caroline is having a very bad day. Her dad is hell-bent on curing her vampirism by giving her aversion therapy. He triggers her hunger by showing her blood bags then, after removing her protection ring, repeatedly exposes her to searing sunlight as she screams in agony. Luckily, Tyler enlists Sheriff Forbes’ help in finding Caroline and they rescue her from her deluded dad. Safe at home, Caroline breaks down while Tyler comforts her in his arms. When Rebecca finally wakes from the dead, she’s understandably peeved at her bro for staking her but she’s even more freaked out that a special necklace she needs to contact the Original witch is missing! Is there no single piece of jewelry on this show that doesn’t have a mystical purpose? Maybe Tiffany needs to get in on this vampire legend stuff. Elena, who has a growing collection of magical bling, is now in possession of the necklace, which of course gives Klaus and his growing band of merry monsters even more reason to be hot on her trail. Sure to complicate matters further is our favorite evil twin, Katherine, who is also in Chicago (big shock) and happened to be at the Cotton Club-style establishment that Klaus and Stefan frequented the night it was raided by the cops  in the Twenties. The cops were shooting wooden bullets, revealing that somebody was hunting vamp siblings Klaus and Rebecca.  Kat looked super cute in a flapper wig like the one Catherine Zeta-Jones wore in the musical Chicago. It’s a great look for Nina Dobrev. What’s Kat up to this time? Is she still chasing after Stefan? With Rebecca back in action, she’ll have to get in line.

The Vampire Diaries September 15 Season Premiere Recap: Stefan kills Damon’s girlfriend Andie!

Andie has joined Jenna in the great beyond.

September 15 – Picking things up two months after last spring’s season finale, the gang in Mystic Falls ponder their lost loves in an episode heavy with aching hearts and violent confrontations. Stefan, who agreed to serve as Klaus’s henchman to save the lives of Elena and her friends, has accompanied the powerful vampire-werewolf hybrid to Memphis on a hunt for werewolves, leaving a bloody trail of victims in their wake. Klaus adopts an American accent to approach a young woman at a remote house, compels her to gain entry and learns the location of a werewolf named Ray from a second woman. He then has Stefan slaughter them in savage fashion. Klaus and Stefan find Ray at a bar and torture him with wolf’s bane-dipped darts to get him to reveal the location of his pack. Klaus feeds him his blood and snaps his neck to transform him into the first recruit to this planned army of super-powered hybrids. Back in Mystic Falls, Klaus’s movements have been tracked by Elena, who’s getting Sheriff Forbes’ inside information from Caroline, and Damon, who’s using his reporter girlfriend Andie’s contacts at the TV station. It’s Elena’s birthday and a flirtatious Damon, freshly scrubbed and naked from a bubble bath he just shared with Andie, surprises her in the living room. Elena orders him to cover up, but I’m not sure she’s totally sorry it happened. Who would? Damon gets serious when he drives to Ray’s house with Alaric riding shotgun. Inside, they find blood-soaked walls and a trap-door leading to a hiding place with a werewolf’s telltale restraining chains. We also learn why Damon refers to Stefan’s dark alter ego as The Ripper. A guilt-ridden Stefan had meticulously recomposed the bodies of the two women he had slashed to pieces! Klaus’s local spies report Damon’s presence in Memphis and a protective Stefan convinces Klaus to let him dissuade Damon from continuing his search. Caroline puts together a raucous party for Elena and has a tense encounter with Matt, who quizzes her about her relationship with Tyler. The sexual tension between Caroline and Tyler is building and she’s not happy he brought a date to the party. Matt and Jeremy share some pot to work off stress in the den and Jeremy admits he’s been seeing things ever since Bonnie brought him back from the dead with her magic. He leaves out, however, that he’s seen Matt’s dead sister Vicky. At the TV station, Andie is surprised by Stefan. When Damon arrives to pick her up, Stefan warns Damon to back off his quest to free him from Klaus’s control. When Damon refuses, Stefan compels Andie to jump off an elevated catwalk and prevents Damon from saving her. When a distraught Damon arrives at home he’s confronted by Elena who has discovered his board tracking Klaus’s movements. Elena’s mad at Damon for keeping her in the dark about Stefan’s whereabouts. It’s too late for Stefan; the trail of victims belongs to him, not Klaus, Damon tells a shocked Elena.

Caroline and Tyler gave in to their animal attraction.

Getting ready to drive home from the party, Jeremy gets a quick flash of Vicky, who asks him for help, and Matt hears him say her name. Jeremy admits to seeing her but Matt thinks it’s just Jeremy wishing he could see her.  He doesn’t realize that Jeremy truly sees dead people. As night falls, Alaric, feeling like a failure, leaves Elena’s home for good and a grieving Damon trashes bedroom furniture. Stefan sneaks a call to Elena but is rendered speechless when she picks up her cell phone. Sensing it’s him, she tells her tortured lover to cling to their love to make it through his ordeal. Having a better evening are Caroline and Tyler, whose supernatural hormones are raging as they fall into bed together. The next morning, Caroline attempts to do the walk of shame but is stopped in her tracks by tranquilizer darts fired by Tyler’s mom. Mrs. Lockwood isn’t as helpless as she looks!  I have to say it was hard to watch the scenes where Stefan savagely took human life and killing Andie to get Damon to back off was a cruel way to “protect” his brother from Klaus. I wonder how this will damage his relationship with Elena. What do you think?

The Vampire Diaries May 5 episode recap: Klaus Kills Jenna!

Goodbye to Jenna! She died a heroine.

May 5 – This episode was a sad one, folks. Exciting, but definitely sad. The writers of The Vampire Diaries didn’t pull any punches telling the final chapter in the tale of the moonstone curse. Characters were dropping like flies and not all of them were obvious choices for death. As usual, Elena was at the center of all the carnage. As the ritual to unleash Klaus’s werewolf side begins, his witch Greta encircles Elena and Jenna in rings of fire. The Klauster shows up with a third pretty lady, the she-wolf Jules, and Greta sets her magical recipe in motion. Jules is in agony since the witch had slowed down her painful wolf transformation in order to keep her vulnerable for the sacrifice.

Jules only wanted to help Tyler.

When Jules attempts to attack Klaus, he easily overpowers her and rips her heart out! Stage one of the ritual is complete. Jules’s werewolf protégé Tyler, meanwhile, is busy trying to rip Caroline and Matt to shreds. Matt shoots him and escapes with Caroline. In the morning, they find a naked Tyler lying outside their door. Matt admits to Caroline that as bad as his life can be, he just can’t deal with the complications that come with dating a vampire. When Tyler wakes up, he thanks Caroline for helping him and consoles her about losing Matt. Is this Wolf Boy’s chance? Hmm. Back at casa Salvatore, Damon has a rare moment of concern for his brother when Alaric tells him that Stefan left to sacrifice himself in Jenna’s place. He and Ric join Jeremy and Bonnie in pouring over the John Gilbert journals for a way out of this ritual mess. Sure enough, John, making himself useful for a change, reveals that there is some fine print in the lore about humans being turned into vamps when they ingest vampire blood. “Skip to the save Elena part,” an impatient Damon demands. Turns out there’s a way to replace a human’s soul before they convert fully to vampirism. Bonnie does a quick mumbo-jumbo number on John and heads out with Damon to save Elena. Alaric, however, is sealed in the house with John and Jeremy by Bonnie to keep him out of danger. Poor Ric is always left behind to deliver bad news to other characters. Just as Klaus is about to proceed to Jenna’s portion of the ritual, Stefan shows up and tries to negotiate with him. Klaus, however, prefers to keep Stefan alive for another diabolical purpose. Jenna valiantly resists by attacking his witch but Klaus stakes her as a helpless Elena looks on in horror! Klaus then feeds on Elena’s blood and she seemingly drops dead! Klaus’s transformation begins and Bonnie shows up to wallop him with her mega magic while Damon snaps Greta’s neck to keep her from interfering. Elijah emerges and reaches into Klaus’s chest to pull out his heart but Klaus tells him that the bodies of their family members are still safe. Elijah chooses family ties over keeping his word to the Salvatores and whisks Klaus away. Damon brings Elena back to the house, where John gives Jeremy his protection ring and a letter for Elena. As John walks outside, Elena comes back to life and he drops dead. Bonnie’s spell had set up an exchange of John’s soul for Elena’s. The next day, Elena mourns the loss of her remaining two parental figures as Jenna and John are laid to rest. Alaric has lost another love to vampirism. What will he do next? That’s what fans are wondering about Damon, who confides in Stefan that Tyler bit him. They’ll find a cure, Stefan promises. Will they do it on next week’s season finale?

New Vampire Diaries Preview: Werewolves lock Caroline in a cage!

Just when I thought the folks at The Vampire Diaries were going to speed up the love triangle between Caroline, Matt and Tyler, they throw us a curve ball and turn the studly werewolf against his vampire crush.  The new preview for tomorrow’s episode shows Caroline getting caged and Tyler cross-examining her about his uncle Mason’s death. Could Tyler be in on Caroline’s caging? Jules recruited Tyler to her side by pointing an accusatory finger at Caroline and her fellow vampires. Now I wonder how Caroline will escape her predicament and, when she does, will she forgive Tyler for turning against her?  Damon, meanwhile, keeps a close eye on John Gilbert as John cozies up to his daughter Elena. John had better watch his step because Damon had a taste of fresh blood recently and is back in bad boy form. Any false moves could be his final ones if he hurts Elena!

Tyler has his first wolf transformation and Rose gets bitten by a she-wolf!

This was the one, folks. The one where we finally got to see what a werewolf transformation really looks like in all its bone-crunching, gut-wrenching glory. Trust me when I say it was not easy to see Tyler experience this sad rite of passage. At least he had Caroline to help him through it. She held him and everything. Looks like the newbie wolf and vamp will become a newbie couple very soon.  Tyler gets spooked by the video Mason left behind of his own metamorphosis and leaves a message on Mason’s cell phone that is picked up by the new gal in town, Jules, who clues Tyler and his mom in on the fact that Mason did not go to Florida as they had been led to believe. Jules is pleased to report to an accomplice that Tyler is a werewolf. The question is whether she is one, too. It’s a question Damon and Alaric are determined to answer as they team up at The Grill to trick her into drinking beer laced with wolf’s bane.

What did Jules' bite do to Rose?

After some playful small talk that feels more like a cross-examination, Jules puts down her glass, reveals herself to Damon and issues him a warning. The she-wolf has “marked” Mystic Falls’ sexy bad boy! While Elena is imprisoned at home, where Bonnie keeps her safe from harm’s way with a sealing spell, Damon delivers blood to Stefan, who’s trapped in the tomb with Katherine. Kat projects some mighty sexy fantasies into Stefan’s still-vulnerable mind and almost gets him to cheat on Elena. Will she succeed the next time? Elena has more pressing concerns, however. Elijah adopts an American accent and wheedles an invitation into her house from eternally clueless Jenna and nearly gives Elena heart failure. Elijah makes her a mysterious offer to get rid of Klaus in exchange for something that we won’t learn until late January when The Vampire Diaries returns with fresh episodes, but something tells me it can’t be good. At least it gets Stefan out of the tomb and safe from Katherine’s clutches. That’s more than we can say for Damon, whose latest clinch with Rose (snooze!) is interrupted by Jules in wolf form. Jules lunges at Damon but Rose pushes him out of the way and gets bitten! After the she-wolf escapes, Damon tends to her wound, which is miraculously vanished. It’s not cured, however, as the two uncover it later to reveal bubbles sizzling on the surface of her skin. Is Rose a goner? I’m not her biggest fan, what with the mannish haircut and all, but she’s not such a bad girl. I feel bad about what lies ahead for her.

Sneak peek at December 9 Vampire Diaries: Tyler’s first werewolf transformation!

Michaela McManus guest stars as mysterious hottie Jules. Is she a female werewolf?

Get ready for The Vampire Diaries to get a lot hairier on December 9. Tyler is finally going to turn into a werewolf during a full moon with new buddy Caroline at his side to help him through the ordeal. Hopefully she will have him well tied up with strong chains. Something tells me that seeing Tyler go through the agonizing pain of a werewolf transformation will bring Caroline much closer to him. Cue the meaningful glances! Meanwhile, Damon’s cover up of Mason’s murder will be jeopardized when a gorgeous woman named Jules (Michaela McManus) shows up in town looking for Mason. From these scenes released by The CW it appears that she encounters Damon in a chummy-looking scene. Is she cozying up to him because she suspects he was involved in what happened to Mason? As Shakira might ask, might she be a she-wolf? In emerging couple news, Bonnie and Luca collaborate on a spell but keep secrets from each other. I wonder how Jeremy will react to the magical duo’s latest venture. More importantly, how much longer will it take him to punch Luca out? Finally, that nasty, well-coifed vampire Elijah pops up again with an offer that promises to be a major game changer.

Jules toasts with Damon. Are they wicked birds of a feather or playing a game of cat and mouse?

Elena will continue to give Damon and the gang trouble in their efforts to protect her from Elijah and Klaus.

Can Jeremy compete with a guy who can practice magic with Bonnie?

Sneak peek at Dec. 2 episode of The Vampire Diaries

Stefan's life will be endangered by something Jeremy does!

I hope everyone enjoyed last night’s journey back in time to explore crazy Katherine’s history. The bad news for fans is that The Vampire Diaries won’t be airing fresh episodes until December 2, but the good news is that our Mystic Falls favorites look to be returning with a bang when they do.  Elena starts a new plan to foil the big Klaus caper and recruits Rose’s help, but Rose ends up calling on Damon (big shock!) when Elena’s plan goes in an unexpected direction. That Rose has her sights set on Damon and I’m not liking it one bit.  Meanwhile, Jeremy is heading for trouble when he teams up with Bonnie to retrieve the moonstone, forcing Stefan to put himself in danger.  At the Lockwood home, Tyler and Caroline will make a discovery that leaves them both terrified. Anything that spooks a vampire and a werewolf cannot be good. Check out these sneak peek photos!

Bonnie is collaborating with the Salvatore brothers more than ever.

Will Rose's meddling be the end of her? One can only hope.

What will Caroline and Tyler find in the Lockwood cellar?

Damon confesses his love for Elena (sort of) on The Vampire Diaries

Elijah's the big, bad new vampire in Mystic Falls. He dresses well, too.

Damon is finding it harder to conceal his growing love for Elena.

November 4 – Where does the CW find all these gorgeous creatures? By creatures I mean young actors who look like they should be walking a runway. As if The Vampire Diaries didn’t already have enough pretty young things of the villainous and heroic variety, tonight’s episode introduces us to a brand new baddie who spells bad news for Elena. He’s tall, chiseled and has poufy hair that rivals that of the Salvatore brothers, and that’s quite a feat! The writers are delving deeper into the past of the Mystic Falls vampire lore with Katherine safely tucked away with the moonstone in the crypt (for now, anyway). The new crop of vamps include a pair named Rosemarie and Trevor who have been on the run from this hottie named Elijah for hundreds of years. Trevor had compelled the masked man who swiped Elena at the end of last week’s masquerade ball episode then killed him after he had delivered her. When Elena comes to in an abandoned house in a different town, she learns from Rosemarie that as Katherine’s doppelganger, she’s the key to breaking a curse that is bound by the moonstone everyone’s running around trying to get their hands on. I’m guessing it cures vampirism. The worst part is that Elena needs to be sacrificed in order for this curse to be broken. While Elena shivers in her boots waiting for this Elijah dude to show up, Bonnie joins forces with Jeremy and casts a tracing spell using a few drops of his blood to track Elena’s location on a map. Talk about blood ties! Damon and Stefan immediately embark on a road trip to rescue Elena during which they bond over their shared concern for her. Damon won’t admit his true feelings for Elena and Stefan shares that he’s been feeding on her blood to strengthen himself. “How romantic!,” says Damon with a jealous sneer. Back in Mystic Falls, Bonnie uses her magic to let Elena know the Salvatore brothers are on the way to rescue her, but the spell knocks her unconscious. Jeremy’s concerned over the toll her escalating use of magic is taking on her body but Bonnie makes him promise to keep her weakness a secret from everyone, especially Damon. Caroline, meanwhile, is keeping tabs on Tyler, who thinks she’s another werewolf. He learns differently during a scuffle with her in which she overpowers him and, composing herself after baring her fangs, tells him sweetly that she’s not like him. Still, their supernatural secrets form a powerful bond between them that promises to get tricky since Damon forbade Caroline to reveal their vampire identities to Tyler lest he take revenge against them for what Damon did to Mason. Time will tell where this twist leads. In any case, I like the chemistry between them although I’m sure Matt won’t. When Elijah shows up at the house, Trevor trembles while Rosemarie negotiates with him for their freedom in exchange for Elena. Elijah is intrigued and pardons Rosemarie but beheads Trevor. Always read the fine print in a vampire’s promise, folks! Just as Elijah tries to whisk Elena away the Salvatores show up and team up against the powerful ancient vamp in a well choreographed attack that succeeds in staking him. Damon gazes lovingly at Elena as she runs in his direction… right into Stefan’s waiting arms. After Elena is reunited with Jeremy and Bonnie, the Salvatores agree to maintain a truce in order to keep her safe from the bad vamps coming out of the woodwork to sacrifice her. Damon visits Elena and, in a heart-tugging scene sure to make Team Damon fans swoon, finally confesses he loves her only to wipe the memory from her mind with his tear-filled eyes before returning her vervain necklace. Stefan, meanwhile, gets a visit from Rosemarie who warns him vamps will continue hunting Elena to turn her over to an ominous-sounding guy called Klaus. Might he be the king of vampires, named after Klaus Kinski who played Count Dracula in the 1979 remake of the classic vampire film Nosferatu? For now the Salvatores and Elena have more pressing concerns; namely, Elijah, who isn’t quite as dead as everyone thinks!

Will Rosemarie go after Stefan now that she's lost her companion Trevor?

Damon kills Mason on The Vampire Diaries!

Damon freed Mason from his curse the hard way.

Mason Loses His Heart Over Katherine

October 21 – Nina Dobrev gets a workout in the opening moments of this episode doing double duty as Elena and Katherine in concurrent love scenes with Stefan and Mason, respectively. Elena and Stefan are relishing their ruse on Katherine that they’re estranged while Mason keeps the whereabouts of the moonstone a secret from Kat. His affair with the villainous vamp is unmasked when he bumps into Bonnie at the setup site for the annual Mystic Falls masquerade ball. Is it my imagination or does nearly every other episode of The Vampire Diaries revolve around some annual festival? According to executive director Kevin Williamson in TV Guide, it’s because there’s nothing else to do in a small town like Mystic Falls plus such events are a good excuse to bring the entire cast together in one location – usually with disastrous results. Such is the fate of Mason, who is kidnapped by the Salvatore brothers with Bonnie’s mind-zapping help. Jeremy, still hoping to become part of the team working against Katherine, stops by to help out but doesn’t have the stomach for the savagery of Damon’s torture tactics on Mason to find out Katherine’s plans. Mason endures agonizing branding by Damon, who tires of the werewolf’s delusions that Kat loves him and rips out his heart. Stefan, meanwhile, tracks down the moonstone to a well on a tip from Bonnie and jumps into it, landing in a pool of vervain Mason set up to keep the stone out of Katherine’s hands. Luckily for him Bonnie shows up with Caroline and they lower Elena into the well to get him out. Elena gives Stefan more of her blood to save his life. Sheriff Forbes is proud of Caroline’s newfound strength and maturity, but her daughter compels her to forget she’s a vampire nevertheless. When Stefan finds Damon cleaning up after offing Mason he pleads with his smug brother not to taunt Katherine to no avail. Kat retaliates by compelling Jenna, who had been spying on Elena and Stefan for her, into stabbing herself to prove how vulnerable Elena’s loved ones are. The act succeeds in breaking up a heartbroken Elena and Stefan (kudos to Paul Wesley for some fine acting in the scene. He can do a lower-lip tremble like few others). Katherine’s not finished, however. Outraged at losing her werewolf henchman, she plots to replace him by activating Tyler’s lupine curse using her latest puppet — Matt!
