The Vampire Diaries January 5 recap: Jeremy leaves Mystic Falls (and Damon kisses Elena again)!

Damon is tired of feeling guilty for "wanting what he wants."

January 5 – Jeremy goes through some major changes and Elena makes “A New Deal” with Klaus to protect someone she loves as The Vampire Diaries returns from its holiday break with a twisty, action-packed episode. The Mystic Falls gang is feeling antsy waiting around for Klaus to retaliate in response to Stefan’s theft of the coffins containing the remaining members of his slumbering family. Bonnie is haunted by a spooky premonition of finding the coffins while Elena has an unsettling encounter with a handsome stranger who turns out to be one of Klaus’s hybrid henchman stalking her as she jogs. Damon gets tipsy drinking alone at The Grill while he and Alaric try to figure out what Stefan and Klaus are up to. Meanwhile, everyone is concerned about Jeremy’s behavior in the wake of his breakup with Bonnie. Elena’s baby brother has taken to cheating on this schoolwork, got fired from his job at The Grill and, most alarmingly, is suddenly buddy-buddy with Tyler. When the trio springs an intervention on Jeremy it backfires and he invites Tyler into the Gilbert-Saltzman home. Now a dangerous hybrid under the influence of Klaus has complete access to their home, Elena worries. Although Tyler assures the gang he’s not a threat to them, Klaus activates a deadly plan B from afar when his ploy to win Damon’s cooperation in getting the coffins back from Stefan fails. To wear down Damon and Elena’s resistance, Klaus compels Jeremy to stand in front of an oncoming SUV driven by his henchman but Ric pushes Jeremy out of the way and is “killed” temporarily while Elena tends to her confused brother. Jeremy is fed up with the daily threats to his life and confronts Tyler about weaning him off vervane to make him vulnerable to Klaus’s influence. Tyler, in turn, is miffed at Klaus’s willingness to sacrifice Jeremy to achieve his goals. Bonnie discovers that Stefan is hiding the Originals’ coffins in the abandoned house haunted by the grouchy witches from the past and clues Elena in. When Elena asks Stefan for his help to protect Jeremy, she’s disgusted by his refusal and slaps him! Damon endures the agonizing sunlight unleashed by the witches to keep him out of the house and drags Stefan outside where he beats his younger brother into admitting he spared Klaus to save Damon’s life. The Salvatores agree to cooperate to work against Klaus while keeping Elena out of the line of fire. Elena, however, has other ideas. She reveals to Klaus Rebekah’s daggered body in exchange for his pledge to not hurt Jeremy. He promises to keep Rebekah from hurting her but Elena warns him that he will need protection from Rebekah as well since she now knows that he killed their mother back in the good old days. Klaus somberly decides to keep his unpredictable sister daggered, which leaves the door open for the eventual arrival of Klaus’s two other brothers Finn and Kol, played by Casper Zafer and Nathaniel Buzolic, respectively.

Have we seen the last of Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen)?

When Ric comes back to life his protection ring fails to cure him of his internal injuries from the car accident and Elena calls an ambulance. The paramedics, however, turn out to be under the control of Klaus’s henchman, who demands to be let inside in order to save Ric. Just as it looks hopeless, Jeremy shoots him with a crossbow and decapitates him in front of his horrified sister. At the hospital, Ric’s regenerative power catches the attention of a sexy doctor played by Paul Wesley’s wife Torrey DeVitto, who’s rockin’ a serious Angelina Jolie vibe. Will the hot doc help Ric with his damaged power or will she complicate matters? Stay tuned! After cleaning the latest blood stains off her porch, Elena decides to take drastic action to keep Jeremy out of harm’s way. Damon compels Jeremy to leave Mystic Falls indefinitely as a tearful Elena looks on. Feeling guilty when a grateful Elena cozies up to him, Damon admits that Stefan didn’t really betray them when he saved Klaus then he indulges himself by giving her a red-hot kiss that’s worth feeling guilty over. The kiss leaves Elena breathless and Stefan one step closer to losing his gal. Watch out Team Stelena!

The Vampire Diaries October 27 Episode Recap: Are Bonnie and Jeremy over?

Have lingering feelings for Anna cost Jeremy his relationship with Bonnie?

October 27 – Just in time for Halloween, “Ghost World” is a rather “spirited” edition of The Vampire Diaries as deceased loved ones haunt the Mystic Falls gang after Bonnie breaches the doorway between the living and the dead. Damon regains consciousness to find himself chained to a chair and tortured by the ghost of Mason Lockwood in the exact fashion that he killed Mason last season. Although Mason enjoys sticking it to Damon – literally – he’s popped up for a more noble reason. He wants to protect his nephew Tyler from a life of servitude under Klaus and knows of an old Lockwood family legend – that family history has a million of ’em – regarding a weapon that can be used to kill an Original Vampire. Mason toys with Damon, leading him to the cellar on the Lockwood family grounds and letting him get impaled by a booby trap set up to protect the secret weapon. While Mason pulls Damon’s strings, the other residents of Mystic Falls receive ghostly visits that stir up old emotions. Anna is acting like she and Jeremy can make a go of it as a couple even though she’s, well, dead. What’s worse is that Jeremy admits to Elena that he still loves Anna. Elena’s not pleased by this turn of events, but she enlists his help in conjuring the presence of Stefan’s bestie Lexi in hopes of pulling him out of the darkness of his Ripper persona. Lexi’s in rare form, overpowering Stefan and strapping him to a chair in the Salvatore dungeon — everyone in town seems to have one of these — while she tortures him to make him feel again and reclaim his humanity. While Jeremy is off kissing Anna, Bonnie’s magic brings forth the spirit of her witch grandmother – played by Jasmine Guy of the ‘80s sitcom It’s a Different World— who demands she correct the imbalance she caused in the natural order of things by resurrecting Jeremy.  The Original Witch’s talisman must be destroyed! But where the hell is that damned thing? At the Founder’s Day celebration, a band of vengeful vampire ghosts settle some old scores with the descendants of the Mystic Falls founding families – targeting Tyler’s mom Carol among them – but Caroline leaps to the rescue.

Mason paid Damon back from beyond the grave.

Jeremy discovers that Anna, who doesn’t want to be sent back to her lonely place on the other side, has the necklace. Luckily, Elena manages to guilt her into giving it up.  Jeremy returns it to an angry Bonnie, who tosses it in a fireplace, sending all the spirits back to Ghost World. Grandma Jasmine is proud of the Bonster. Lexi runs out of time in her intervention with Stefan but urges Elena not to lose hope. Anna is reunited with her mother as a reward for returning the talisman. Mason fades away just as he discovers the key to finding the weapon to use against Klaus. Damon, who can’t enter the space in the cave without being invited, summons Alaric. Ric is amazed to find a wall covered with ancient hieroglyphics that tell the story of the Original Vampires – Klaus’ Viking family. This is the point where we learn more about what led to Klaus being such a crummy dude. That’s great and all, but I still want to know what happened to Katherine when Michael bit her! Any ideas?

The Vampire Diaries October 20 Episode Recap: Mason Lockwood Returns!

Stefan is frighteningly good at pretending not to care for Elena. Or is he not pretending anymore?

October 20  – A number of cat-and-mouse games play out on the latest episode of The Vampire Diaries “Smells Like Teen Spirit” but it’s hard to tell who are the cats and who are the mice. Stefan and Rebecca, left behind by Klaus to watch over Elena and Tyler, respectively, are making nuisances of themselves in the lives of our Mystic Falls gang. Stefan bullies the students at the school track and Rebecca makes moves to take over Caroline’s place as the resident golden girl, perhaps even in Tyler’s heart. Alaric gives Elena self-defense classes to toughen her up. Spooked by Stefan’s coldness – he compels young women into playing a twisted round of Twister while he feeds on them – Elena concocts a plot to put him out of commission. Unfortunately, she’s not the only one plotting in Mystic Falls. Vicki convinces Matt to perform a ritual that brings her over to the world of the living. The catch is that she is on orders from the Original Witch to kill Elena so that Klaus can’t make any more hybrids. When Matt tries to stop Vicki from carrying out the witch’s orders, she clocks him with a wrench. She intends to stay among the living at any cost! Anna warns Jeremy that Vicki is up to no good but a jealous Bonnie turns to Matt to find a way to zap Vicki back to the land of the dead and lonely. Vicki stalks Elena at a bonfire where Elena is setting a trap for Stefan. Damon arouses Elena’s jealousy by flirting with Rebecca, who sees right through the ruse. Elena succeeds in luring Stefan into the path of Alaric’s crossbow filled with vervane-tipped darts. Just when they pack his unconscious body into Ric’s truck, however, Vicki traps Elena inside and sets it ablaze. Bonnie once again comes to the rescue and casts a spell that whisks Vicki to the site where she and Matt banish her back to the land of the dead. Despite his fear of being alone, Matt won’t allow his sister to hurt others. Judging from the growing online chatter about a possible hookup between him and Bonnie, I suspect he may not have to deal with loneliness much longer.  Jeremy, meanwhile, is growing closer to Anna, with whom he manages to connect physically after sharing that they can’t stop thinking about each other. Is this the beginning of the end for Jeremy and Bonnie?

Can Tyler resist his hybrid urges... and Rebecca's temptations?

Tyler and Caroline make up after having an argument over his new allegiance to Klaus. He’s been sired by the Original Vampire and is having trouble resisting his new urges, especially the young woman Rebecca serves up as his first human feeding. Damon gently tends to Elena’s bruises, his face temptingly close to hers as he assures her his flirtation with Rebecca was just an act. It’s obvious his display with the bloodsucking blonde got under Elena’s skin and it’s just as evident that he’s thrilled by this realization. Team Damon scores! The same can’t be said for Stefan, who cruelly taunts Elena for holding out hope that he will return to the side of the good guys. Exercising her new-found girl power, Elena stabs him in the gut as payback! Katherine, who’s been trying to rouse Michael the undead vampire hunter with human blood, gets a surprise of her own when she discovers that he prefers the blood of his own kind as he abruptly pulls her close to feed on her! Just as I thought I couldn’t be more shocked, Damon is attacked by a resurrected – and thirsting for revenge — Mason Lockwood!  Has Klaus succeeded in creating another hybrid?

Sneak peek at December 9 Vampire Diaries: Tyler’s first werewolf transformation!

Michaela McManus guest stars as mysterious hottie Jules. Is she a female werewolf?

Get ready for The Vampire Diaries to get a lot hairier on December 9. Tyler is finally going to turn into a werewolf during a full moon with new buddy Caroline at his side to help him through the ordeal. Hopefully she will have him well tied up with strong chains. Something tells me that seeing Tyler go through the agonizing pain of a werewolf transformation will bring Caroline much closer to him. Cue the meaningful glances! Meanwhile, Damon’s cover up of Mason’s murder will be jeopardized when a gorgeous woman named Jules (Michaela McManus) shows up in town looking for Mason. From these scenes released by The CW it appears that she encounters Damon in a chummy-looking scene. Is she cozying up to him because she suspects he was involved in what happened to Mason? As Shakira might ask, might she be a she-wolf? In emerging couple news, Bonnie and Luca collaborate on a spell but keep secrets from each other. I wonder how Jeremy will react to the magical duo’s latest venture. More importantly, how much longer will it take him to punch Luca out? Finally, that nasty, well-coifed vampire Elijah pops up again with an offer that promises to be a major game changer.

Jules toasts with Damon. Are they wicked birds of a feather or playing a game of cat and mouse?

Elena will continue to give Damon and the gang trouble in their efforts to protect her from Elijah and Klaus.

Can Jeremy compete with a guy who can practice magic with Bonnie?

Damon freed Mason from his curse the hard way.

Mason Loses His Heart Over Katherine

October 21 – Nina Dobrev gets a workout in the opening moments of this episode doing double duty as Elena and Katherine in concurrent love scenes with Stefan and Mason, respectively. Elena and Stefan are relishing their ruse on Katherine that they’re estranged while Mason keeps the whereabouts of the moonstone a secret from Kat. His affair with the villainous vamp is unmasked when he bumps into Bonnie at the setup site for the annual Mystic Falls masquerade ball. Is it my imagination or does nearly every other episode of The Vampire Diaries revolve around some annual festival? According to executive director Kevin Williamson in TV Guide, it’s because there’s nothing else to do in a small town like Mystic Falls plus such events are a good excuse to bring the entire cast together in one location – usually with disastrous results. Such is the fate of Mason, who is kidnapped by the Salvatore brothers with Bonnie’s mind-zapping help. Jeremy, still hoping to become part of the team working against Katherine, stops by to help out but doesn’t have the stomach for the savagery of Damon’s torture tactics on Mason to find out Katherine’s plans. Mason endures agonizing branding by Damon, who tires of the werewolf’s delusions that Kat loves him and rips out his heart. Stefan, meanwhile, tracks down the moonstone to a well on a tip from Bonnie and jumps into it, landing in a pool of vervain Mason set up to keep the stone out of Katherine’s hands. Luckily for him Bonnie shows up with Caroline and they lower Elena into the well to get him out. Elena gives Stefan more of her blood to save his life. Sheriff Forbes is proud of Caroline’s newfound strength and maturity, but her daughter compels her to forget she’s a vampire nevertheless. When Stefan finds Damon cleaning up after offing Mason he pleads with his smug brother not to taunt Katherine to no avail. Kat retaliates by compelling Jenna, who had been spying on Elena and Stefan for her, into stabbing herself to prove how vulnerable Elena’s loved ones are. The act succeeds in breaking up a heartbroken Elena and Stefan (kudos to Paul Wesley for some fine acting in the scene. He can do a lower-lip tremble like few others). Katherine’s not finished, however. Outraged at losing her werewolf henchman, she plots to replace him by activating Tyler’s lupine curse using her latest puppet — Matt!

What will Bonnie discover about Mason on the October 21 episode of The Vampire Diaries?

Word from the CW has it that Katherine is setting her sights on a new victim in the October 21 episode.  My money’s on Jeremy, who joins Damon and Alaric’s plot to take on Katherine despite Elena’s efforts to keep him out of the line of fire.  Does that kid have a death wish? Oh yeah, that’s right. He does. Bonnie, meanwhile, gets some time in the spotlight when she discovers some new information about Mason and shares it with Damon. That’s a recipe for disaster if I ever saw one!  See the sneak preview pictures below and tune in on October 21.

Mason is working for Katherine on The Vampire Diaries!

October 7: A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

Caroline came through for Elena and the Salvatore brothers!

I’m so bummed to learn that Mason isn’t who he appeared to be after all. He had me fooled that he was one of the good guys! But I’ll get to tonight’s big reveal later in my post. First up, we learned that Caroline’s mom Sheriff Forbes definitely wouldn’t react positively to the news that her ditzy daughter is now a ditzy vampire. At least the reason Mama Forbes found out bodes well for Caroline’s character considering she’s been wavering on the line between good and evil ever since she vamped out. Well, as Stefan pointed out, getting vampirized heightens a person’s personality traits and Caroline was pretty self-centered to begin with. Her relationship with Matt brought Caroline outside her selfish cocoon and made her vulnerable to Katherine’s threats against him in last week’s episode. I was very proud of her for making the right decision to reveal herself to her mom in order to save the Salvatore brothers. OK, that’s my cue to get to the details. Knowing that Caroline was spying for Kat, Stefan and Elena pretended to be on the outs and staged a public spat.

Mason has fallen under Katherine's spell!

Mason, meanwhile, was intent on unmasking Damon to get him off his back. At Tyler’s behest, he explained how the Lockwood werewolf curse is activated when an affected family member causes the death of a person, whether intentionally or accidentally, as he had done in the past. Tyler, of course, has a near-miss involving a drunk girl falling down the stairs at his house later that day. He confronts Jeremy, who admits he knows about the Lockwood curse. Tyler confides in his frenemy that he’s keeping the moonstone from Mason because he doesn’t trust him. It turns out Tyler has good reason to be suspicious of his uncle. In his efforts to out Damon to Sheriff Forbes at a party to celebrate the opening of a new Mystic Falls park, Mason spikes the lemonade with vervain, which practically chokes an unsuspecting Damon. When the Salvatores corner Mason in a secluded area, they’re shot with wooden bullets by Sheriff Forbes and her deputies. When Damon won’t fess up to Liz about how they can walk in sunlight, she orders her deputies to stake him and Stefan, but Elena and Caroline stop them. Well, it’s more like Elena got captured and Caroline single-handedly saved the Salvatores by slaughtering the deputies who were just doing their jobs. Liz can barely look at her daughter’s blood-splattered face. Despite Liz’s bigotry, Damon decides to let her live and promises to erase her memory of finding out her daughter’s a vamp. Elena’s impressed. Stefan’s brush with death convinces him he needs to resume drinking human blood to man up and face the threat of Katherine. Elena’s disappointed in him, but changes her mind when Damon points out that it’s the only way to have a fair chance against the Kat. Like a certain telepathic waitress on another vamp show that shall remain nameless, Elena offers up her own blood to nourish her lover and it is quite a sexy scene. Ahem. Spooked by the accident with the girl, Tyler gives the moonstone to Mason, who in turn hands it over to his secret accomplice, Katherine! The wolf is in cahoots with the Kat. What a dog!

New behind-the-scenes shots from tonight’s Vampire Diaries!

Attention Mason fans: do NOT miss tonight’s Vampire Diaries unless you want to miss another sexy look at his amazing bod! Well, if you absolutely have to, don’t fret because I’m gonna be nice and post a great tank top shot I got from my friends at The CW. We know from the commercials that Elena and Katherine finally come face to face tonight, which is the main event after all, but what’s an episode of Vampire Diaries without a little eye candy? The Lockwood wolves certainly are in great shape what with all that running around they do in the woods, but Damon is looking mighty good albeit more covered up than the lupine hotties in his scenes with Katherine. The Kat’s confrontation with Elena is what I’m most looking forward to. Tune in!

Mason is a sight for sore eyes on tonight's episode.

Taylor and Ian discuss werewolf-vampire relations. Hope the mic doesn't fall on their heads!

Nina Dobrev, always looking stylish, works a denim mini over tights while getting stage direction.

Ian takes a coffee break on set. Wonder if he prefers it with milk or cream?

Let's see... curly hair? Must be Nina as Katherine plotting away!

Katherine reveals new secrets on the September 30 episode of The Vampire Diaries.

Kat's back! Can she lure Stefan back?

It looks like we’re going to learn more about Katherine’s motivation for returning to Mystic Falls in the September 30 episode. The Kat is going to confront both Salvatore brothers and word from The CW is that she reveals some new juicy tidbits about what went down back in 1864. Flashback, anyone? Kat will give Stefan an ultimatum that pushes him and Elena into a corner. Meanwhile, Damon faces off with Mason and ends up paying a price in his drive to unearth the Lockwood family skeletons. Check out these sneak preview shots and tune in next week!

Caroline becomes a vampire on The Vampire Diaries.

The hunky Lockwood werewolves are muscling in on the Mystic Falls action!

September 16: Caroline’s Brave New World.

Caroline wakes up at the hospital and quickly realizes all is not well. She’s pale as a ghost, can’t stand the feel of sunlight on her skin, and has an uncontrollable appetite for blood. Hmmm, I wonder what the problem could be? Her unlucky nurse helps her figure things out pretty quickly when Caroline’s new vampire instincts kick in and she feeds on her and compels her to forget about the attack. Caroline apologizes for her overzealous feeding frenzy (it was her first, after all) and instructs the nurse to explain away the huge bandage on her neck by saying her husband likes to get kinky. Only Caroline would come up with that. Pleased with her new talent, it looks like she may adapt to her new lifestyle very well. I just wonder how her mom, the town’s vampire-hunting sheriff, will react when she gets the news! Setting up at the annual school carnival, Elena tells Bonnie she wants to be normal and do “human stuff” for a change. Fat chance, Miss Gilbert. In the aftermath of Damon’s attack on Jeremy, Stefan gives Elena’s baby brother some advice on protecting himself from vampires with vervane and, if necessary, wooden stakes. Damon, however, has a new agenda, namely figuring out what type of supernatural beings the Lockwood men are. His charm helps him snag an invitation from Mrs. Lockwood, acting as interim mayor until a replacement for her dead husband is named, to join the anti-vampire Council. Talk about putting a fox in charge of the henhouse!!! Adding to Damon’s lucky streak is the timely arrival of a shirtless and sweaty Tyler and Uncle Mason after a rigorous jog. Casting Taylor Kinney as Mason was a stroke of genius. He truly looks like he could be Michael Trevino’s relative. They even have matching pecs! In any case, Damon overhears Mason quizzing Tyler about his anger bouts, further piquing his curiosity. Tyler’s suspicions about Mason’s agenda grows, too, when he catches him searching the den for a Lockwood family heirloom, a moonstone. Tyler finds it in a safe hidden under the floorboards. What does it do? Damon runs into Caroline at the school and learns that she’s part of the undead team. She delivers Katherine’s declaration of war and, with her memories of his campaign of abuse on her last season fully restored, tosses him clear across the room for good measure.

How will vampire-hating Bonnie come to terms with Caroline's new life?

Damon calls an emergency meeting pronto. Stefan and Elena forbid him from killing Caroline and we all know how well Damon follows orders. At the carnival, he takes a break from hunting Caroline to set up a fight between Tyler and a carnival worker to observe what happens when Tyler has an anger fit. Stefan, who learned that Mason has supernatural strength from an arm wrestling match he had with him, watches as Mason unleashes some agile lupine moves on the carnival worker as he breaks up the fight. Tyler notices a feral red tint to Mason’s eyes during the dustup. The jig is almost up, Mason! After the Lockwood wolves split the scene, the poor carnival worker, emerging from Damon’s mind control, tends to his wounds when a ravenous Caroline jumps him and drains him to death. Stefan and Elena prevent Damon from staking her and vow to help Caroline control her new vampiric urges. A shocked Bonnie can barely look at her newly undead friend and lashes out at Damon, nearly burning him to ashes before Elena intervenes. She certainly loves fire, doesn’t she? I think Bonnie needs to loosen up and maybe a romantic triangle with Matt and Caroline might be in order. Poor Matt is so confused by Caroline’s new behavior he keeps turning to Bonnie, so I could see this happening. Luckily for him, Caroline learned to control her bloodlust like Stefan taught her and doesn’t feed on Matt when he sneaks into her bedroom later that night to confront her about her sudden weirdness. Jeremy does his own sneaking and surprises Damon at his home. He changes his mind about killing Damon; however, since he’s so curious about the undead’s “life.” The two bond tentatively over their fathers’ shared hatred for vampires and the legacy it had on their families. Just don’t expect a big bro thing, warns Damon. Next week, get ready for the werewolves!
