TVD’s Fierce Females: Why I loved Lexi on The Vampire Diaries

Arielle Kebbel is feisty and fabulous as Lexi.

Today I shared this photo of Arielle Kebbel in a flashback scene as Lexi on The Vampire Diaries from last year. We have two weeks left until TVD returns with fresh episodes and I’m going kind of “batty,” so to speak, without original TVD action Thursday nights as I’m sure you all are regardless of whether you’re Team Delena or Team Stelena. I’ve been on Twitter a lot lately, making new friends and sharing fun pics of our TVD faves. I gotta say TVD fans on Twitter are so creative with their Twitter page designs and Twitpics. We are the best fans for sure. Anyway, I noticed that some of TVD’s long-gone characters are still being worshipped out there and I think it says a lot about how the TVD writers create great female characters.  These ladies, whether they’re “good girls” like Elena or “villainous vixens” like Katherine, are always kick-ass. They are right in the middle of things, mixing it up with the big boys like Damon and Klaus, and they’re not wasting time standing in the corner crying and waiting to get rescued. Hell, this year Elena did the rescuing of Stefan, who was in serious dog poo with all that Ripping he did under Klaus’s influence. So this week I thought I’d give props to some of TVD’s most memorable “fierce females” and I’m starting with Lexi because it was so great seeing her during the “Ghost World” episode. She was in rare form with her dry sense of humor and deadpan delivery as she gave Stefan some tough love, torturing him to make him feel again and reconnect with his humanity. She ran out of time by the episode’s end, but passed the torch — figuratively, anyway– to Elena, and Stefan eventually escaped Klaus’s clutches (for now, at least). She reminds me of the new Caroline. She’s feisty and loving and has a low tolerance for B.S. I hope the TVD writers find another way to bring her back soon. In the meantime, I got really excited to see Arielle emerge from a car that had just struck Liam on the mid-season finale of The CW’s 90210. Will she have a recurring role in Beverly Hills now? Time will tell. We all know The CW takes good care of its homegrown talent.

The Vampire Diaries September 22 Preview Video: Damon and Elena discuss Andie’s death.

Damon and Elena have a chat about Stefan’s call to Elena in The CW’s preview of this week’s episode. Damon has understandably lost faith in the possibility of Stefan returning after he killed Andie. That’s saying a lot considering Damon is the king of giving in to a vampire’s natural urges. Then again, he’s slowed down a bit in the slaying department since his feelings for Elena deepened and it looks like Andie’s death truly affected him.  It’s funny since I always thought he would be the one to kill Andie. He certainly mistreated her enough and she submitted to the abuse.  Still, I’m sad she’s gone. I think her character had potential. I also believe killing her will have long-lasting effects on Stefan’s psyche. Can he carry out Klaus’s dastardly plans and remain true to his good nature or will the strain drive him insane?

The Vampire Diaries September 15 Season Premiere Sneak Preview Pictures

Damon looks intense -- and sexy -- in the September 15 season premiere of The Vampire Diaries.

The third season premiere of The Vampire Diaries is just around the corner (hooray!) and the CW has released some behind-the-scenes shots showing what’s to come for the gang in Mystic Falls. Klaus seems to be settling in to his new contemporary digs. A new character named Ray, played by David Gallagher, has some dealings with Klaus which seem pretty tense by the looks of these pics. The love triangle between Caroline, Matt and Tyler looks like it will continue, which I like, and the gang as a whole looks gorgeous as ever. Can we ask for anything more? Tune in September 15!

Klaus rocks some cool boots in his new contemporary look as Mystic Falls' new bad boy.

Is the gang plotting strategy to rescue Stefan from Klaus?

Klaus lays down the law to Ray (David Gallagher). Is Ray one of Klaus's henchmen?

Caroline continues to weigh her feelings for Matt against the ones she has for Tyler.

Hot-blooded Tyler is still in Caroline's romantic picture.

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Sneak Peek Video Premieres at Comic Con!

The CW released a new Vampire Diaries sneak peek video at Comic Con this week to tease the new season and it looks juicy!  The role-swapping scenario the producers set up at the end of last season is going to play out as Stefan becomes fully immersed in his murderous ripper persona as Klaus’s new henchman, leaving Elena to grow closer to Damon. The question is whether Damon will take advantage of the situation to replace Stefan in Elena’s heart. Tune in September 15 to find out as season 3 begins!

Vampire Diaries Sneak Peek Photo: Klaus appears on April 21!

Joseph Morgan debuts as the devilish and delectable Klaus on April 21.

OK folks, I know that the news of actor Joseph Morgan’s casting as the much-anticipated villain Klaus broke a while back, but here’s a sneak peek at the handsome Mr. Morgan in full costume in a flashback scene set to air on April 21. All I have to say is: My, what thick, wavy hair you have Mr. Ancient Vampire Baddie! It’s about time you showed up. LOL! I have more behind-the-scenes pictures to share in my next post (hint: Katherine looks gorgeous in her period gowns, plus a certain dead villain with great hair and a British accent makes a return appearance in the flashback). Until then, enjoy the view here and don’t forget to tune in tonight when The Vampire Diaries FINALLY returns with a fresh episode. Did that sound grouchy? Sorry. I’m just famished for fresh VD as I’m sure you all are. Tonight, we feast!

Vampire Diaries February 17 Sneak Preview: Damon sets a trap for Elijah!

Elijah (Daniel Gillies) seems hesitant to enter a room. Does he sense a trap?

Guess who’s coming to dinner? A tall, dark and nasty supervamp named Elijah, that’s who. Blah! Hopefully nobody will gag on their food – or their internal organs! The CW hints at a new confrontation between Elijah, who’s spending a scary amount of time around Jenna under the watchful eye of Alaric, and Damon, who just learned from John Gilbert the secret to killing Originals. Damon lures Elijah to a dinner party at Jenna’s place along with Ric and Damon’s new fling, TV reporter Andie, played by guest star Dawn Olivieri of Heroes and True Blood fame.  It turns out that some last-minute information will throw a wrench into Damon’s plot. So what else is new??!!  Might the sneaky John have omitted some crucial bit of information from his remedy for killing Originals? Hmmmmm. Meanwhile, the Bonnie-Luka storyline takes center stage as Luka has a heart-to-heart with his warlock father Jonas, who’s been protecting Elena’s chums on Elijah’s orders, but is creeping out Bonnie – and me — big time. Bonnie’s not digging the warlock father-and-son act intruding in her life and perhaps Luka is having second thoughts about his dad’s plan for her. Stay tuned, folks!

Alaric (Matthew Davis) is watching Elijah closely.

Jonas and Luka have a chat. Do they disagree about Bonnie?

Have Damon (holding the moonstone!) and Stefan moved Katherine to a new prison or is that Elena in that scene?

Are you Team Damon or Team Stefan? Does it matter?

New Vampire Diaries Preview: Werewolves lock Caroline in a cage!

Just when I thought the folks at The Vampire Diaries were going to speed up the love triangle between Caroline, Matt and Tyler, they throw us a curve ball and turn the studly werewolf against his vampire crush.  The new preview for tomorrow’s episode shows Caroline getting caged and Tyler cross-examining her about his uncle Mason’s death. Could Tyler be in on Caroline’s caging? Jules recruited Tyler to her side by pointing an accusatory finger at Caroline and her fellow vampires. Now I wonder how Caroline will escape her predicament and, when she does, will she forgive Tyler for turning against her?  Damon, meanwhile, keeps a close eye on John Gilbert as John cozies up to his daughter Elena. John had better watch his step because Damon had a taste of fresh blood recently and is back in bad boy form. Any false moves could be his final ones if he hurts Elena!

Vampire Diaries January 27 Recap: Damon does a mercy killing.

Damon had no choice but to put Rose out of her agony.

January 27 – This episode features some mighty fine acting by Ian Somerhalder, who goes from touching to terrifying in the blink of an eye as the torn Damon Salvatore struggling to reconcile his savage vampire nature with his resurgent humanity. He definitely goes through the ringer on this one and I was feeling for Damon a lot. We also got more evidence that Jules is one baaaaad werewolf chick. She may not be as powerful as Katherine, Mystic Falls’ undisputed top villainess, but Jules is trouble with a capital T. We first see her waking up in the aftermath of a particularly grisly kill at a camp site where she tries to burn the mangled remains. When an unlucky deputy happens upon the scene she bludgeons him to death to cover her tracks. After Damon leaves an ailing Rose in Elena’s care at his place he confronts the she-wolf and tries to bargain with her to find a cure for the wolf’s bite. His intimidation gambit falls flat because Jules isn’t afraid of big bad Damon. “Put a stake through her heart,” a defiant Jules suggests prophetically. Elena is thinking the same thing when a delirious Rose turns rabid and attacks her. A resourceful Elena uses sunlight to fend Rose off and locks herself in a room with a makeshift stake. When she exits the room she encounters Damon and the two head out to find Rose, finding her just as she bites big, bloody chunks out of a young couple leaving the latest festival. Damon returns Rose to his home and comforts her as she grapples with unimaginable pain and guilt over killing the innocent locals. Realizing there’s no other options, Damon lulls Rose into a dream in which she revisits her idyllic human life in England and gently stakes her to release her from her agony. Ian’s lone tear drop is an acting coup and I really felt for Rose, whom I admittedly found annoying because I thought she lacked chemistry with sexy Damon. Still, the scene belonged to Ian.

An unlucky woman paid the price for Damon's emotional turmoil.

After Elena hugs him to express her condolences over Rose’s death, a tortured Damon gets smashed and lures an unsuspecting female motorist to her doom, the whole time keeping us on pins and needles as we beg him not to kill her knowing full well that he was gonna do it. And boy did he ever! Yikes!  While Damon reclaimed his bad boy credentials, Caroline finds herself smack in the middle of a love triangle. Matt kisses her after she confesses her love for him but she pulls away without sharing the news of her bloody new diet with him. While the eternally clueless hunk scratches his head in confusion, Tyler shows Caroline his gratitude for her support with a big wet one and she responds. Pulling away, she exclaims “Everyone just needs to stop kissing me!” Lucky girl. Tyler has reason to change his tune where Caroline’s concerned when Jules reveals her werewolf status to him and implicates Caroline in Mason’s death. Join us, she tells him, adding that more werewolves are on their way to Mystic Falls for a showdown with the vampires. She’s trouble I tell ya!  Stefan, meanwhile, gets Isobel’s number from Alaric so he can enlist her help in saving Elena from super vamps Elijah and Klaus. His search reunites Elena not with her mysterious mom but with her daddy dearest, “uncle” Jonathan Gilbert!  Where’s Katherine when you need her?

Sexy new Vampire Diaries YouTube video asks: “Got Wood?”

When the folks at The Vampire Diaries say “things that go bump in the night,” they probably mean boots because there seems to be a whole lot of horizontal action planned when the show returns tomorrow after a  l-o-o-o-n-g winter’s break.  From Stefan, Damon and Elena to Caroline and umm, somebody (Tyler? Matt?) … everybody’s body temperature seems to be rising… even the vampires! Check out the new footage from The CW and let the games begin! Welcome back, gang!

Twitter petition launched to get Ian Somerhalder’s Foundation on The Ellen DeGeneres Show!

Ian Somerhalder may be an undead bad boy as Damon on The Vampire Diaries, but in real life there’s no doubting that the guy’s got lots of heart.  He has created a nonprofit foundation that collaborates with a range of organizations dedicated to  making this world a better place and boy, do we need this kind of effort.  The Ian Somerhalder Foundation partners with non-profits, companies and governing bodies globally to effect positive change in the environment, energy resources and animal welfare.

The group’s initiatives, as outlined on their website, include:

  • Distributing funds and resources towards global conservation, green energy development/deployment and educational tools.
  • Creating awareness that global deforestation can be seen as a national/international and global security risk.
  • Creating mobility by engaging and supporting of the most powerful, yet disregarded, disrespected and overlooked population on the planet – our youth.
  • Ending animal cruelty and promoting programs such as: “species specific sterilization drugs”, transferring and re-training of abandoned animals into assistive and therapy guides.
  • Supporting and creating sustainable strategies for “no-kill shelters.”

I came upon Ian’s foundation this morning while surfing Twitter where I saw a tweet about a “twitition” asking for signatures from Ian fans to support a drive to get him and his foundation featured on the Ellen DeGeneres show. This is a cause I can definitely get behind and I hope you will, too. Visit the Twitter page here and help get Ian’s great work spotlighted on Ellen!
